I played a little with parallel builds on my double code mac and there  
were no obvious problems. Compile time dropped from 30 seconds to  
about 20-22 seconds for the variours make -j N cases. I don't have a  
full blown plplot configuration here, but so far this looks very  
promising. Thank you very much for the effort!
