No they are not assigned by Palm.

Each developer is "encouraged" (not required) to register their own
Creator ID to ensure that another application doesn't clobber it when
installed (as MovieMobile has in this case). I personally registered the
Creator ID of 'Plkr' quite awhile back when Mike, Alexander, Holger and I
were working on Plucker's innards. I also took the time to register several
other permutations of the same lettering (the Creator ID is case-sensitive).

It's like a primary key in a database. When you delete an
application on the Palm, the OS basically does "DELETE from PALM where
CREATOR like %CREATOR_ID%". If 10 things call themselves by the Creator ID
Of 'Plkr', 10 things (and their associated data) will be deleted.

It "belongs" to us, and there's no reason other than malice, that
MercuryGuide would use it in their application. Their "launcher"
application, Movies.prc, is not derived from any Plucker components as far
as we can tell, and should never have "accidentally" acquired this
CreatorID, and simply calls the Bluefish viewer application installed on the
Palm device (which _IS_ based directly on Plucker source code).

We're looking into it, but I may end up posting a clear warning on
the front page of our website not to install MercuryGuide's version if you
use Plucker, because it will "destroy" your ability to use Plucker.
