No, you would do the equivalent of pilot-xfer -i SomeFile.pdb. I do
this now, with some Plucker content, though I'm only one person, and I trust
the security of my own machines, but others may not.

That's another method, but requires a specific tool to be installed
on either the user's machine, their Palm, or the server. None of these are
good approaches overall, and if you're doing it client-side, now you have
the complexity of having to support either the OS on the desktop, or the OS
feature-set on their Palm.

SSL would go a long way, but when you're talking about simply
pulling a .pdb file across, there is no need for security, especially if
that pdb file is just one containing public news content.

The "trust" part comes from you, the user. How do you know that I
(the server operator in this case) am _only_ pushing you a Plucker database?
I could make a very small change to the code, which you wouldn't even see
flicker by as you sync the data, that grabs your Palm UserName and UserID
from your Palm itself. I could even grab your AddressBook, and fake a
message on your (local) Palm screen that says "Syncronizing Plucker" if I
wanted to.
That's the trust bit.
