Software is certainly one approach. But how about shipping the unit to some sort of palm hardware repair shop?
I'm not sure how they're doing it, but I imagine there may be some sort of short-lived battery (or capacitor?!) in the M125 that charges from the main battery(ies), and only lasts so long normally. But if so, then it sounds like this short-term battery, which would only be used during battery changes, may have died or lost most of its ability to hold a charge. In which case, it could conceivably be a very simple, inexpensive repair for folks with experience in these things.
