That *is* supposed to be the raison d'être for a LUG. Do tell your friend to choose a distro (or at least the eye-candy level) that works well with his hardware. For a cafe, it could be really legacy. He could also do well with terminal services, but for that I welcome the experts here to advise. btw, no top posting for mails to the LUG.
