It depends on the processor. Check the data book. For example, the 533-MHz
Celeron PPGA is rated at 70 deg Celsius max die temperature. Since I'm
overclocking my 400-MHz Celeron PPGA to 600MHz (right now 570MHz is all I
can manage) and there is no temperature data for 600/570MHz I used the
533-MHz ratings.
With a 70 deg die temperature, the maximum temperature of the heat sink
(I've determined this from practice) is around 45 deg Celsius. The Celeron
PPGA has the die at the bottom of the package. On top of it is a copper
thermal slug (aluminum-coated) and the heat sink is in contact with the
slug. So the temperature gradient from die to slug to heat sink is about
25 deg Celsius (my main board has a Top Tech thermistor probe that I put
on the processor heat sink).
When heat sink temperature goes above 45 deg Celsius (actually above 43
deg for any prolonged period) I already get blue screens in Windoze. I
haven't gotten these in Linux because my Linux apps don't pin the CPU for
long (in fact, I can run safely for prolonged periods at 600MHz under
Linux). For Windoze, I got MSI's CPU Softcooler to lower the temp.
The FC-PGA Pentium III E is the best overclocking solution right
now. Because:
1. it's 0.18micron, runs cooler, and can hit 1GHz
2. the Vcore is 1.65V so it runs cooler
3. the flip-chip packaging has the die on top of the chip so there's no
need for a slug to increase the thermal resistance and thus it's
easier to cool
4. the 0.25micron process can only hit 600MHz or so
A PIII-600E can make 800MHz easily, and a PIII-650E can do 866MHz (run
them at 133MHz FSB). I'm looking at these chips, but I would need PC133
SDRAM to overclock successfully, and I already have 256MB of PC100 SDRAM,
far too much to discard.
As for heat sink paste, Alexan sells it at around 250 per tube.
