UTP cable is used.  I'm not sure now which is which but crossover is for
direct connection to the NIC, and straight is for connection to a UTP
HUB... I may have it in reverse, though.  Sorry...

what do you mean, 'lan ports' ?  Think of a cable modem as a bridge
between the NOC and your computer.  So you basically just assign an IP
address to your NIC and it should work as if you're directly connected to
their HUB.  Now assigning an IP address, well that's left as an exercise
to the reader \8)
