john carmack has a quote at linuxgames.com about the disappointing sales
performance of quake3 on linux. and i have an idea why..

just this afternoon i downloaded build 425 of unreal tournament for linux
(just 5MB). this, in combination with the windoze unreal tournament CD,
allowed me to install the full UT on my linux box.

the short:

 - some minor pixel text problems, fixed after a quick web search
 - very good performance! and i was running UT and Oracle8iR2 at the same
   time!
 - weird shadowing on all textures (annoying, ruins the wonderful UT
graphics, but does not affect playability.. too much)

the third problem was really bugging me. imagine my dismay when i saw in
the UT install readme: "07/31/00 - texture problems with 3dfx
hardware. this is a bug in DRI. fixed in the latest CVS."

so.. if i am to get good UT gaming, i will have to get the latest CVS DRI
from sourceforge and build from scratch!! i mean, DirectX <5 was horrible
for drivers, but nothing THIS bad!!

i guess there are 2 sides to the coin. it's a major undertaking to fix
this seemingly small bug. but i can do it. with DirectX its pray to bill
and hope for deliverance. but for the vast majority of gamers out there
who dont know WTF CVS or Makefiles are.. its an immediate no-go for linux
gaming.
