an execellent replacement to vnc is freenx. it is not difficult to install. it works on the same idea as vnc but it has better compression and thus much faster.

for this set-up you would need:
1. of course your apps server. install freenx on it. no special ports has to be defined. it uses ssh to authenticate.
2. clients have to install the nxmachine client (www.nomachine.com)
3. it was designed to load the full kde/gnome desktop environment. so to make it more efficient you have to costumise th DE to be leaner.
4. good luck.

Hello peeps,

Just want to pick your collective minds.

You see, I'm currently evaluating solutions for
providing our 30-something sales force with mobile
apps.  I've seen the telcos' solutions and commercial
solutions like Metaframe are quite pricey.

So here's what I'm thinking:  I set up an LTSP server
and use vnc clients on my clients accessing our
network via a vpn session.  Apps would initially be
mail and openoffice.  Database apps would follow soon.

What would I need to implement such?  server specs?
distro?

TTFN.
