That's great. This is the first step. The second step (installing and
introducing the new system) if done well makes the difference.

You can always use old, deprecated distros if you want to.

If we're going to base this on current existing desktop environments and
default installs, you're going to have a problem. I have an old P166
with 128MB RAM at home running barbones ubuntu with XFCE and so far
everything is ok, a bit slow but usable and I only use this box to surf
the net and do some very minor editing in svn trunk.

however is a different story.

However, my old Vaio P166 makes a great LTSP client though.
