That's right, using solid-state devices like Linksys VPN units are going to be much more reliable, much easier to administer, and a whole lot cheaper. The OP should really consider this option. I guess the only reasons to go for the full Linux box setup would be that if you have very special needs that only a custom setup can provide, or you just love to tinker and you really want to build your VPN net from scratch, learning lots of things in the process.
