I'm not really an ATI user (I use the other leading brand) but if all
you'll be doing is 2d, X.org/XFree86's 2d driver should be just fine
for those newer cards (R3xx and R4xx chipset). I'm not sure about Xv
support on the oepn-source ATI driver, but if I'm going to base my
experiences with Xorg's nVidia open source driver (nv) and the binary
driver (nvidia), Xv support in the open source driver is not as good
as the binary driver. Anyway, you only need Xv if you play hi-res
video (DVD, hi-res DivX, etc.)
