i'm a firm believer in  evolution by natural selection. under the evolutionary pressure of oppressive software pricing, SOMETHING is bound to happen:

1) linux usage will become more widespread
2) M$ will make pricing adjustments

or something else. there's no need to be a "hero" about it. necessity is the mother of invention.
