It would be nice if Microsoft fully documented its format and allowed
other people to implement 100%-compatible applications, but...

I wouldn't blame OpenOffice.org for that one. Fortunately, I've never
had problems sending DOCs and PPTs to classmates and teachers who
needed them, and I use the school's computers for the few times I need
to do something with PivotTable...
