if it's any consolation, i just spent the weekend trying to reconstitute my machine at home. either i am extremely stupid, or the freebie ubuntu 5.10 installer CD's being shipped out are bugware [EMAIL PROTECTED]

it just plain Doesn't Work (TM)

at first i thought it was a problem on my 160G drive on my circa-2000 motherboard. so i tried another drive, my old 28G. same thing: ubuntu does its thing, then on reboot it gets stuck with some GRUB error. only the first stage loads (never gets to the second stage where you can edit the command line).

i must say this has turned me off on ubuntu permanently. but then again, i only tried it because i couldn't find my fedora install CD's. but this machine ran red hat from 7.2 to FC3 / CentOS 4 without problems. so it's not a case of "weird unsupported hardware."
