and for you and me, we have the skills and inclination to prefer to tweak
the system and make it work for us. thats engineer talk and its fine with us
right? but you know what? normal people don't care about such things. they
just need the thing to work.

Yes me too. I dont believe in the separation between gurus and
newbies. We all walk the same right? we put one leg forward and then
the other. i like to just push the button and immediatley logging in
and then start working where i left off yesterday. And i dont want to
be asked about a filename when i finish. And i dont want to remember
to click save either.

Where we differ is in the amount of control we have over our software.
And our ability to produce them. but that doesnt mean the needs
differ.

those things are normal everyday stuff. but there are some apps out there
that the commercial versions are much better. photoshop over gimp?
photoshop.

Is it easy to use? IMO its not. I will say the same thing for all the
other WIMP apps out there.

If i try to imitate photoshop no way. The most complex part is the
damn ui. yes i probably will write a new picture editor and i actually
intend to do that. its not rocket science. there is a lot of code out
there to manipulate pictures. and there is a lot of literature on the
subject. i dont have to buy the knowledge and the software.

linux cluster? well we probabaly can write our own for that.
climate modeling software? tall order, it would be nice to have an open
source software out there but i guess the climate modeling community have
their own internal stuff for that that they write.

code to launch say... a long range missile or to destroy one or to intercept
one.... would you want that open sourced? i'd feel safe knowing people who
really know that kind of stuff and who will use it for the right thing have
it.

Why not? Relying on peoples good will and character does not always
work. Who is the perfect judge of character? This is technology and
its going to be passed around regardless. Iran is building their own
nuclear weapon which it intend to use on isreal as soon as possible,
Pakistan and india have their own long range missiles. So whats if we
acquired our own long range missile software? Or our own antimissile
software? If everybody had acess to that people will hesitate to build
missiles in the first place. Its all about balance of power and dual
use open software can dramatically improve that.

things i hate about my linux pc:

1. it takes more than a second to boot up
2. keeps asking about filenames and directories
3. does not remember what i was working on yesterday
4. does not remember all the changes i have ever made
5.cannot figure out necessary settings by itself
