I really have another job so I can't give too much time providing detailed
support. I expected the sys ad to work out the problems himself, if I point
him to the right direction. Apparently, he thinks Windows will be easier for
him overall.

To tell you the truth, I think anytime I can keep someone off my
system administrator's back is a good thing. If the users still want
to use Windows, then there isn't really something we can do about it.
And if the administrator thinks Windows will be easier for him
overall, we can't do anything about that.

It's noble that you do all that you can to promote Linux and Free/Open
Source Software, but unfortunately you can't win them all -- it's
better that you focus on how you use FOSS and let people see how they
can use FOSS at their own pace.

Any suggestion will be helpful. If I can show that half or 2/3 of the problems
he raised could have been solved had he tried harder, management might indeed
ask the sys ad to try harder.

I don't want to burst your bubble, but "making the sys ad try harder"
wouldn't be the best solution if they will be more productive paying
for Windows and the office applications they want to use.

It's really a business decision, and if management sees that instead
of the people being productive on Windows and non-FOSS solutions they
spend more time not being productive on Linux+FOSS, they they have to
decide either way: stick to Linux+FOSS where it's just taking them too
much effort to keep it together or pay up for the software that will
make them more productive.

At any rate, if the system administrator is not in any way familiar
with Linux or the intricacies of actually getting things to work with
Linux, then you might have to accept that it's a case of PEBKAC -- and
maybe replace the administrator? :D
