or if you insist on using the tar.gz package... find the executable
(mode +x) file in that directory and launch it! :)   u may find a
"config" file from that directory... launch it using "$ sudo ./config"

then "$sudo ./install"

that's it...

Not really a direct answer but it would be a lot easier to install
firestarter by doing a "sudo apt-get install firestarter" at the terminal.
