Gedit has syntax highlighting. If you start a new file, gedit does not know if
you are working on C/C++/Java/HTML, so by default, it does not highlight.
But the moment you save your file, the colors show. So what I do is, when I
start a new file, I immediately save the blank document under the correct
filename, so I get syntax highlighting from the start.

What I do not like about gedit is that if the matching parenthesis is not
visible
on the current client area, parenthesis matching does not work. What I'd like
is for gedit to fold the code to show both the parenthesis at the cursor and the
matching parenthesis. I do not know if any text editor does this automatically,
but it is a nice feature to have.

What I like about gedit over kate is that gedit is so much smaller and yet has
enough power to do what I need. Kate is bloated and so much support stuff
is running in the background doing things that I know little about. Is this not
dangerous stuff?
