emacs may have been bloated in the redhat3 days. but nowadays its pretty sleek.
eclipse is in a completely different league. heck its even more bloated than JDeveloper! if you read the reviews comparing commercial Java IDE's, JDeveloper always comes out at the top in the speed and responsiveness categories. of course Eclipse is open-source and JDeveloper is only free-as-in-beer (being derived from JBuilder), but somehow I don't think most people would even care (it's not infrastructure, besides Java itself aside from J2ME is still closed).
