open source has it's uses, but definitely, I can see why companies can justify the expense for Oracle's other features. It's not like you're paying for inferior products. For instance, paying for a "professionally" made OS which crashes every time you use it or gets hit with spyware and viruses each time you connect to the net. As a network administrator, I'm willing to pay, if the product offers solutions which cannot be found in cheaper or free (as in beer) software.

But methinks that people complaining that it has too many features, are people who haven't used it or don't plan to use it and are griping. :D But these features arguably add value. Let me think of more: Oracle Advanced Queuing (AQ) is a queue mechanism built into the database; and it exposes a JMS API. So you don't need to roll your own or get yourself a DB plus Mantaray or some other JMS broker. It's all in the DB! and this is free, as well. Again, if all you're after is an operational data store and you're using PHP or Perl or JDBC, then definitely you won't see the value proposition of Oracle. But if you're after manageability (Grid Control is amazing -- there's nothing like it), high availability with built-in clustering (no more dinking around with Linux-HA or Sun Cluster or Veritas Cluster!), etc -- all in the same package -- there's nowhere else to go.
