but Big Companies (TM) don't like the idea of their core database being secured by some Perl scripts... :-P
Its not the language, MS Windows is built using PEAL and i wouldnt be surprised if most high-level languages compilers uses PERL since it has a great parsing parsing engine. Its all about securities (not the technical term but the business one), the paper bill you have in your wallet is a form of securities. Therefore when you buy products such as Oracle or MS, included is a form of securities that can be part of the company asset. Eg: even with the same machine specs, a company that owns 100 BSD servers does not have the same value as the company that owns 100 MS servers. On 4/26/07, Orlando Andico <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
Yes you're absolutely right. I can see why open-source has great value, I still consider myself an open-source advocate. But, it's nice to have a feature /when/ you need it (and not have to cobble things together from stuff you find in forums... not exactly a good enterprise-software methodology). Of course you end up having to /pay/ a large sum for it. In many, many cases, it is possible to get the Oracle feature with Free software. e.g. the multi-factor authorization? a cinch with IPtables and some Perl scripts. but Big Companies (TM) don't like the idea of their core database being secured by some Perl scripts... :-P On 4/26/07, Danny Ching <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > open source has it's uses, but definitely, I can see why companies can > justify the expense for Oracle's other features.
