upon bios bootup it detects raid is online but i can still see /dev/sda and
/dev/sdb using fdisk -l. does it means my raid is not functioning?

Hardware RAID is transparent to the OS. Software RAID is implemented by the OS,
so it's not transparent. You will still see all your hard drives (in dmesg, or
by using fdisk and company), but you should notice that you're now mounting the
software RAID devices, /dev/md*.

Cheers!
