I don't think IBM would port RPG and CL into Linux. Why would they do that to a milking cow?
Converters, if any, would only make the work faster, but you would probably still have a lot of of work cut out for you. It might be better to reverse engineer that system and use RAD/OOP tools to build a new one from scratch. Also RPG II/III forces you to adopt some bad coding habits (e.g. 7-letter max on name, 4-letter opcodes, a very entrenched procedural programming paradigm -- F/E/I/C/O specs). If somebody wants to break free from their legacy systems, they should also break free of the baggages these come with. And if these are truly legacy systems, you probably have tons of CL programs (we call 'em shell scripts in the Linux universe), as well as other objects like CMD, MNU. I'm not attacking the iSeries machine. Haven't touched one since 2003. I love the machine though -- most rock-hard stable machine I've ever encountered with, and the integration of OS, RDBMS, and Apps. But damn expensive to acquire and maintain. --- mike t. ----- Original Message ---- From: Pablo Manalastas <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Philippine Linux Users' Group (PLUG) Technical Discussion List <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, May 28, 2007 11:16:39 AM Subject: Re: [plug] as400 newbie questions. Here is the discussion on slashdot regarding porting AS/400 (including RPG) programs to Linux: http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/02/18/1859256&mode=thread&tid=99 As you can read, there is no agreement on whether the applications port 100% to the other side.
