It's best practice to place the mails (or at least /var/mail - since I
assume that's where Domino saves the mailfile) on a separate partition.
This will prevent spam and heavy email users from flooding /.
Now this is where BackupPC comes in, it'll backup the whole partition to
another PC (or even on the same box). No locked files occurs since the
said partition is mirrored bit by bit, not copied one file at a time
(which won't work on locked files).

Yup,BackupPC can do this.

There are other backup solutions available, a friend swears by Tivoli.
You might want to check that out too, I haven't tried it though.'
And then there's EVMS, Bacula, Mondo, and PartImage, but the key would
always be a separate partition. Most of them works best by mirroring
partitions, but if you ask them to backup a directory (located on the
same partition), they'll mostly back it up by copying files which, as
I've said, doesn't work on locked ones.
