based on my experience with [branded] tape drives, they're pretty reliable.
one time, i was able to restore and move the archive out from a dusty (10 year old?) tape drive and tapes. albeit restoration was slow, the migration is much faster than those guys restoring from thousands of CD-Rs :) just make sure you'll also store a bunch of tape cleaners too hehehe. anyway, we're not that lucky with obsolete optical media since our reader is no longer operational. and if anyone is going to archive data on optical media, make sure to use a reliable disk because the dye on CD-Rs/DVDs also fade as caused by poor temp, lighting, etc. conditions.
