don't single out tapes since the same thing goes for hard drives, optical
media, etc.
but yes, don't trust just one.

i think it's a common practice to use at least two different types of media
for archiving
with each having two copies of the same data (i.e. off-site) and then
migrated to a new
type of media whenever necessary.

and btw, backup != archive  (
