im using Damn small DSL (knoppix), you can run a live cd via usb then copy
the vmdk to the host which contains the user setting and other config files
from /etc (i used symlinks rather than moving the config files outside
/etc). Then just have the vmdk file mounted on boot and it should work. The
OS will remain in the USB :)
