Hello Jepoy,
Probably one of the liveCDs running a firewall. Among the several
projects there's PFSense (BSD) and SmoothWall Express (Linux).
Contrary to others' assumptions it is not true that running a firewall
and OS on a CD is not practical or won't scale well. What you have to
consider is the expected workload of the firewall i.e. number of
hosts, size of the network, PPS and bandwidth. After assessing your
requirement, you can then decide on the equipment.
If you prefer to do it yourself or under a tight budget you can get
away with a x86 solution. A fast CPU, plenty of ram and good cards
like e1000/em or sky2/sk should get you started. You don't need to
jump the FWSM, ASA, FW-1 or the Fortigate bandwagon right away.
