thank you guys for the inputs.

essentially, what i need to do is to run any remote desktop tools (ala vnc). im 
halfway around the world and i need to manage the pc back home.

buying any hardware to be able to do this is out of the equation.

logmein seems ok, but it's commercial. maybe hamashi. enable terminal service 
on XP pc back home. and i connect thru rdesktop. the problem with this is, when 
someone connects through remote desktop, the console logs out. i want them to 
see what im doing.

both PCs are NATed, so yeah, the software should be able to go around it.

would you have any other recommendations? tips?
