I tend to think that the most important thing about FOSS is not about FOSS vs Windows, It's not even about functionality or productivity. It's about the philosophy and the completely different approach to software building.
For example - Just about anyone with enough knowledge or energy can 1) fiddle with a simple word processor or a really advanced enterprise backup system (think Bacula) to see how it works. 2) build one and see how others can make it better 3) implement it for profit or non-profit 4) use one and make it better by contributing code In other words, it's more about empowerment - the capacity to do what you want with what you what anytime you want. Money is hardly an issue here. In FOSS - the brains AND the heart is what really matters.
