every distribution that i know of lets you do that.  i don't use
ubuntu's gui, so i am manually checking for and installing updates
using the command line apt-get/aptitude/dpkg rather than using the
sparkly notifier and the guiified synaptic.  if you choose to use the
desktop, you can still go my way, you just have to customize your
panels or ignore 'em.  go team TMTOWTDI!
