    I think that there must be a Farraday cage surrounding my brain that
prevents intelligent thoughts from getting out to my conscious.

    Problem fixed: I did not have the proper MAC address for the Toshiba in
the Asus' access control list. No idea where I got the number in there
(might be that of the Asus itself), but I deleted that, entered both Toshiba
MACs (ID and LAN), booted the laptop and it connected. HOO-HA!

    Even works in the den now, with 100% quality. The problem before must have
been the radio in the Linksys WRT54GC was too weak.

    It's interesting that in the office, on the north side of the house
facing the street, wicd-client sees 10-12 other networks; in the den on the
south side facing the park it sees 2 (ours and one other).

Whew!
