If this were my setup, well, firstly I'd say "I'll just use something else" - but if I did get curious enough to investigate further, I'd start looking at how xpdf does its job. Watching CUPS logs is a good starting point for this, as well as Tools like strace and ltrace. I don't know if lpr has its own logging capabilities.
