I suspect that it's some sort of hinkiness (probably hardware) in your
Thinkpad.  Running a VM is a big job that uses RAM and CPU heavily, and
thus is more likely to trigger problems.

First guess: bad RAM.  Second guess: CPU or chipset heatsink has come
loose.  FreeGeek Store has 2GB DDR2 SODIMMs for your laptop, they might let
you do a test-swap.
