My wife and I are interested in adding a device that will function as a place to put backups that is not on either of our regularly used machines. It has to be able to be used by whatever version of Linux I'm using, plus XP and Win7.
I started Googling network attached storage and find a number of "diskless" boxes starting around $150 and going way up. At least one of them specifically mentioned compatibility with Win2000 and on, and Ubuntu 9.04 and on. I assume "diskless" means that I still have to buy a hard drive to put in the thing. I also assume the only reason to choose one of these boxes is that they are likely to be lower power consumption than a used computer who's only purpose would be file storage. It seems as though I should be able to put together a box that runs Samba and configure it to be accessible from the machines on the home network. Am I missing anything here? -- Regards, Dick Steffens _______________________________________________ PLUG mailing list [email protected] http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
