My backup strategies have evolved over the years. I'm currently running a Macbook Pro, and an Airport Extreme, so my main backups are automatic, using TimeMachine. It's saved my bacon a couple of times. Similar strategies are available for most operating systems. However... I also have storage where I host my domain. I have a script that runs once a day that rsyncs files to that storage. I pick and choose what I back up there. Mostly it's just the very important files that get this treatment. This gives me backups that are readily available, locally, and backups that would survive if something happens to my house and takes the computers with it. I also don't have to remember to back up my files. It happens as needed in one case, and once daily in the other. What it comes down to is, how much data loss are you willing to accept and how much effort do you want to expend to mitigate this possibility?
