opera and libreoffice also store settings in $HOME (.config or . local I
don't recall)

If clearing the .mozilla or .firefox folders works, you may have to do the
same with the others.

Also libreoffice used to have a GUI utility to "register" cups printers.
 some sort of print config app that tells the suite what printers are
available.

also, for HP printers, if you set up manually make sure HPLIP is not
running. or if it is, configure via hp-setup since some HP printers need a
binary blob plugin ( such as my M1212nf MFP).
