I can't call them until Monday, but they sell it with Ubuntu preloaded,
and the first thing I did when I received it was to wipe it out and
install Xubuntu. So chances are they will use that as an excuse to get
rid of me.

However, for the last couple of hours it has been silent. Everything
keeps working fine. Unless it returns I'm going to ignore it, but I'm
still curious what triggered it. Computers that are running fine should
not make loud noises at their owners.
