Aha! I think you may have hit the nail on the head here, although I
can't prove it yet.

On Thursday a replacement AC adapter for the laptop arrived. There is
nothing wrong with the one that came with the laptop; I just wanted an
extra so I wouldn't have to untangle the AC adapter from the mess of
wires behind the laptop whenever I wanted to go somewhere with it.
Thursday evening I plugged in the new adapter to see if it would work
well. It seems to be working perfectly.

But I can't prove that the problem is caused by the new adapter. I don't
know any way to test it, other than plug it in and see if it works. And
it seems to be working fine.

Also, I have disconnected and reconnected the old adapter numerous
times in the past, and the computer never bleeped at me when I did. And
I plugged in the new adapter Thursday night, but the computer only
started bleeping at me Friday night. Just now I checked the connection,
and it is firmly plugged in all the way.

The evidence against the new adapter is circumstantial, but we have
hanged men on less. If the computer starts bleeping at me again I will
reseat the adapter connection.

I completely forgot about the new adapter, but now that you made me
aware of it I will keep my eye on things to see if I can come with
something that proves that the problem is in the new adapter. Thanks
for the suggestion!
