At one point in time, it *was* necessary to do this because disk space was so expensive and log files can grow very fast, can be highly compressed, and provide a rolling record of historical data which is desired in many environments. There are other ways to view the data while in it's compressed state. Check out the commands 'zgrep', 'zcat', and 'zless' from the command line.
