   Thanks. Now there's a hardware issue: only the Vaio logo screen displays.
It won't boot from the optical drive and only once displayed the LILO
screen. I tried booting into the huge kernel but that failed, too. 99.9% of
the time I don't get as far as the LILO screen. Probably coincidence since a
missing module would not prevent getting to the LILO prompt. Sigh.

   Any reputable laptop repairers on the east side of the Willamette River?

   Normally, I explicitly exclude the KDE modules (other than base and
library), but at the 14.1 upgrade I installed them all and just got around
to removing them this morning.
