Ed, Thanks. Now there's a hardware issue: only the Vaio logo screen displays. It won't boot from the optical drive and only once displayed the LILO screen. I tried booting into the huge kernel but that failed, too. 99.9% of the time I don't get as far as the LILO screen. Probably coincidence since a missing module would not prevent getting to the LILO prompt. Sigh.
