When I tried to open VirtualBox today I got an error message telling me
it won't install. I looked on the VirtualBox forum and found this:

A complete (zipped) copy of the VBox.log is required for any reliable
analysis, but my best guess, based on the many recent threads covering
the same issue with Ubuntu (and its derivatives) is:
1. You are probably using Ubuntu's own (built from source code)
version of VirtualBox, from the Ubuntu Repository; and not the
official Oracle VirtualBox release only available
via:https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
<https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads>.
2. If "1" is correct you probably currently have VirtualBox Version
6.1.50 (released Jan 2024). That information would be shown in a
complete VBox.log.
3. If '1' and '2' are correct, then you are using an out of date and
'End of Life' version of VirtualBox which is no longer receiving
maintenance updates, which may be required for the use of more recent
updates to the the Linux kernel.
Solutions if the above apply:
- If you have accepted a recent kernel update, roll back to the
previous working version and see if VirtualBox resumes normal working
- If it does, then wait for Ubuntu to provide a VirtualBox 7.0.20 (or
later) build before moving to a newer Linux kernel release; or
- Get rid of the Ubuntu VirtualBox installation and install the
'official' VirtualBox 7.0.20 release, which many users have already
confirmed as working correctly.
My copy of VirtualBox is 6.1.50_Ubuntu r161033, which is confirmed in
the error log
00:00:01.022683 VirtualBox VM 6.1.50_Ubuntu r161033 linux.amd64 (Jan
23 2024 12:29:45) release log
00:00:01.022685 Log opened 2024-07-03T14:45:46.946204000Z
00:00:01.022685 Build Type: release
00:00:01.022689 OS Product: Linux
00:00:01.022690 OS Release: 5.15.0-113-generic
00:00:01.022691 OS Version: #123-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jun 10 08:16:17 UTC 2024
Easiest would be to wait for Ubuntu to provide their update. However, I
need to use Win10 tomorrow. Is there someplace I can look to see when
Ubuntu will update their version of VirtualBox? If I follow the
recommendation to switch to the "official" VirtualBox 7.0.20 release,
will I have to reinstall the various virtual machines I have? Should
there have been some warning that this was coming?
Thanks for any help.
