Data/VMs live, by default, in your $HOME/*VM directory, config is in
.config/VirualBox* directory.

Installing/removing a package should not touch your home the same way
uninstalling libreOffice doesn't delete your documents.

That said - it may be good idea to backup those directories from time to
time if you care about the VMs.

Yes, it does. I've always been a fan of having more than one machine running most of my stuff, in the event that something goes wrong with the other one. I'm about to begin unloading the Ubuntu version of VirtualBox on my secondary machine. I appreciate your advice, both in your initial response, and this one. I'll post my results later on.
