It doesn't seem like Pine was designed to retrieve mail from a POP server
on its own. Here are some things you may want to consider:

1. If you have a dedicated and decently fast connection to your mail
server, and it has an IMAP server available, you can configure Pine to
work on your mail directly on your mail server. Pine supports IMAP.

2. You can also configure Fetchmail to retrieve mail from an IMAP or POP
server. It can then dump it to either a local Mail Delivery Agent (MDA),
like Procmail or Maildrop, or to a local Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) or SMTP
server like Sendmail, QMail, or Postfix. Both MTA and/or MDA will then
take care of (presumably) storing your e-mail locally, either somewhere in
/var/spool/mail/$USER, or $HOME/Maildir/. Pine can then access the locally
stored mail directly, or via a local IMAP server (as in my case). You will
have to set up your MTA and/or MDA, though. You'll normally want to set up
your MTA to queue outbound mail until the next dial-up. Postfix has great
instructions on how to do this. I prefer it's solution to even QMail's.

Good luck. :-)
