The reply posted by William involving strfile works. 'fortune' simply gets
a random string from a random-access string file created through strfile.
'strfile' converts a percent-delimited text file to a random-access string
file. You can specify a different delimiter to suit your data - man
strfile for details.
In order to make your fortune file part of the system's fortunes (so that
you don't have to specify which string file to use), you can put the
whatever.dat in /usr/share/games/fortunes/ . You can specify the fortunes
that 'fortune' looks at on the command line - file, dir, or all. You can
even specify the probability that the fortune will be selected from a
particular file. =)
You can configure pine to call fortune (or a script which calls fortune)
for your signature! <impish grin> Just make sure to use short ones
(specified through -s). For added coolness, come up with your own
fortunes, or find some really interesting stuff. <laugh>
