Can't use ALSA. The au8830 driver requires a binary-only module released
by (now-bankrupt) Aureal Semiconductor and it's for an OSS-style
driver. Sayang, the au8830 is a kick-ass card pa naman (no need for ESD,
on kernel 2.4 you can open /dev/sound/dsp up to 96 times, with different
streams and sample rates, mixing is done in hardware).
