1) i dont have the sound-slot crap. here's the relevant portion of my
dmesg:

..
au88xx: Loading...
PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:10.0
PCI: The same IRQ used for device 00:04.2
PCI: The same IRQ used for device 00:04.3
au88xx: Found vortex PCI device:
au88xx: id=0x0002
au88xx: bar0=0xdd800000
au88xx: irq=10
devfs: devfs_register(): device already registered: "dsp"
devfs: devfs_register(): device already registered: "mixer"
au88xx: Add device, audio=3, mixer=0, midi=2
..

my /lib/modules/2.4.0/kernel/drivers/sound only contains a single
file: soundcore.o.

i used the rc.devfs script from the devfsd distribution to save/restore my
devfs permissions across reboots. for some weird reason:

$ cd /dev/sound/
$ ls -l
total 0
crw-------    1 orly     root      14,   4 Jan  1  1970 audio
crw-------    1 orly     root      14,   3 Jan  1  1970 dsp
crw-------    1 orly     root      14,   2 Jan  1  1970 midi
crw-------    1 orly     root      14,   0 Jan  1  1970 mixer
crw-------    1 root     root      14,   6 Jan  1  1970 unknown6

but i do not recall ever setting ownership of those files to
myself.. well, whatever works..
