It's more than just opportunities for corruption, I think.  If you've ever
tried to maintain obsolescent hardware, you'll understand.  It's next to
impossible to get a hard disk that is less than 10 GB in this day and age.
If my sister's 3GB hard disk crashes, we'll definitely have to buy a new
machine and her pentium classic board will be cannibalized for spare parts
by my old lab... It's also becoming increasingly difficult to get a
non-AGP video card.  Does anyone know where I can still get 72-pin EDO
RAM?  The rapid pace at which hardware evolves is against us.

Admittedly, Linux can allow old hardware to go chugging along for much
longer than other OS's will allow, but it's not a silver bullet that will
allow us to cease getting upgrades.
