Finally figured out the problem...
When I ran df, the Linux filesystem (ext2) was almost 100% full. There was
no way for other users to create temporary files for their use!
(I'm feeling like Homer Simpson... Duh!)

double check if the account is created. sometimes (yes in mandrake 7.1)
the installer fails to add users defined during the installation
procedure.
on the prompt, try using finger
finger <username>
if it does not exists, try manually adding the user... run
man useradd
